JAMMIN’ WITH JIMMY SPENCER AT THE SILHOUETTE

I had the special pleasure of catching singer Jimmy Spencer’s act at the Silhouette in Burbank on Valentine’s Day.  Dressed in a tuxedo with red accents, the singer delivered a number of classic songs in a velvety style that matched his elegant look.

To add to it all, Karen Hernandez , his longtime musical partner, backed him on piano with the other members of Karen’s trio that included Lou Shoch (bass) and Jack LeCompte (drums).  All in all they perform a mixture of finger-snapping, toe-tapping jazz, blues and ballads.  The band actually starts off the set with some popular songs and then Spencer comes on stage to deliver sweet and sensual songs in a soft and easy style.

Songs included “Just in Time,” “More,” and “Crazy” and a crowd favorite for the holiday “My Funny Valentine.”  The entertainer delivered the goods in a warm, romantic style with touches of his deep masculine gentleness.  The energy was electric as Spencer and The Karen Hernandez Trio virtually breezed through two musical sets to an appreciative and packed house.

Spencer and Hernandez, who have partnered since the sixties, are so comfortable together it is as if they can read each other’s minds and they probably can.  Hernandez also wrote one of the night’s special songs “Riverside Drive,” a fast, frenetic style piece with a touch of Latin that themes on the joy of live music.  It is also homage to that famous street in the San Fernando Valley.  The song is featured on the CD “Shades of Blue” that is a compilation of jazz and blues highlighting the combined talents of Spencer’s strong, clear and seasoned vocals with the musical genius of Hernandez and her group.

Gracious and engaging, Spencer gave praise throughout to the band and to the décor and service at Silhouette.  The décor is unique and striking and the atmosphere is classy and a strong tribute to the hospitality leadership of John Gevorkian and his wife, Marina.  The menu offers many wonderful Mediterranean-style dishes that are very tasty.  Silhouette is located at 245 E. Olive St., in the heart of downtown Burbank.  Bar/restaurant/night club – silhouette is a relative newcomer to Burbank and is well worth checking out.
